Conclusion

This was my second attempt in order to create a working mash-up. I’m very pleased with the results as the application is doing exactly how I imagined it to. The idea of weaving different user’s accounts at one place and having to control between those accounts was achievable using Quartz Composer. Having to learn the program just for mash-up within a limited period of time, Quartz composer was fairly easy and gave many options to make things work.

The application requires feed addresses of the people one wishes to follow. The followers can be totally strangers or groups of interest, like I’m following two groups of interest for my application. I’m following Android and MAC Make-up posts on Twitter and images from Flickr. It was a co-incident I found both on Twitter and Flickr. As far as I’m aware same people do not run the accounts however I’m getting out what I wanted. MAC make-up images as background and post related to MAC as a layer appearing on a higher level.
Current Application allows eight RSS feeds to be used a one time, four of Twitter and four of Flickr. Input parameters allows user to feed different URL RSS feed addresses inside Quartz Composer. The application can only run on Mac machines, as Quartz Composer is not supported on Windows.

The application has gone through a few design stages as shown in my earlier posts on blogger. The blog consists of images along side with videos. The videos demonstrate my working throughout the project, starting from learning Quartz Composer to creating my mash-up.

Problems
I did have problems with twitter feeds as they take up to half an hour to get up-dated when used by another software. The other problem I had with twitter feeds was that I couldn’t use the direct feed address into Quartz Composer. One RSS feed would work on it own but when combined with Flickr feed or any other Twitter feed, it would break down. I used Yahoo Pipes to overcome this problem. For my own accounts I’m using Twitter user number and for Twitter Android and MAC make-up I’m using their Usernames to get RSS feed. There is no special reason why I’m using two different ways to get results its simply because I was testing a number of things while creating this mash-up.

API
I needed to request an API key for Flickr in order to follow others and my own feeds in Quartz Composer. The process was simple and all the instructions were on Flickr’s website.

Digg Labs - 365

365
Digg's application presented by McDonald's
There is no description on the application but I assume that its picking up on stories/news depending on dates and time which is being displayed using a connecting calendar.

My Friend's Wheel

Facebook application called Friend Wheel. It's creates a visual of our friends and how we are connected to eachother.

Digg Labs - Arc

Arc
Project by Digg Lab
Though stories are arranged using ARC I think this works great as a site map. The loops connecting to relevant sources. Visually its very attractive and stories keep on adding up, adding more colour and loops to the centre. One of my favourite applications.

Digg Labs - Pics

Pics
While browsing the web for other mash-ups I came across Digg's own photo gallery. It's very interactive and full of life as the thumbnails in grids are always moving in their lines. Most of Digg applications are using flash otherwise there could've been a possibility that I use Digg's Photo lab's RSS feed for my mash-up.

Quartz Composer mailing list - help

I e-mailed QC's mailing list regarding the image showing up as thumbnail and slideshow. I had a user replying me helping me sort my problems out. The pictures above shows image as content and is picking 19 images from RSS feed.

Combining accounts

The image above shows my QC's application using two flickr and two twitter accounts.

Yahoo Pipes - Twitter ID

Yahoo Pipes - Twitter Username

Yahoo Pipes for Twitter RSS feed based on user's Username.

Yahoo Pipes

I was having problems inserting twitter feeds directly into Quartz Composer. It was clashing with Flickr feeds though they both had their on URL fields. At one point of of the twitter feed worked simply on its own. To overcome the issue I used Yahoo Pipes. I used two routes to get a feed that worked in Quartz Composer.
1: Twitter feed - using User's ID
2. Twitter feed - using User's number.
Having to create two accounts to be able to test my application I'm using two of my own account numbers and two User ID's in my final application.

QC Help

I highly recommend Quartz Composer Apple list. I couldn’t make the RSS feed from Flickr turn into a slideshow. I joined the list and put up my question with the patch. Received reply the following day and it was just what I wanted. It is very helpful online community.

How to Send an Audio Tweet

http://mashable.com/2010/07/26/how-to-audio-twitter/
An interesting article on how to send audio tweets. Might be useful to add that to my application later. As the image from flickr and tweets from twitter shows, introduce an audio tweet which can be a welcoming message per user.

Quartz Composer - Audio Detector

Getting started with Quartz Composer
QC Audio Detector Patch
Being new to Quartz composer I create a few patches to get use to the program and to explore the tools and library. Audio detector is a patch which is based on an image being controlled by sound around the machine. The image stays in centre till a sound is made which makes it loose control in space.

Concept

Looking into many famous social networking sites I have decided to create a mash-up, combining Flickr and Twitter in order to propose an application that will works with real-time data.

My idea is to create an application, which will allow the user to view the Flickr images and twitter tweets of selected people together. The selection of people can be friends or people who one would like to follow and keep up to date.

Instead of following a big community this application will allow users to customise the people/groups of interest and narrow down the search however, one will be able to edit the people/groups they would like to follow or delete from list. I’ll work towards combining 2-4 user’s Flickr and Twitter accounts.

The thought is to be able view many accounts at once on one screen without having to login and search for people/groups one by one. The user will be required to input feeds from Flickr and Twitter only one time, just the way we require username or –mail address to add a new person to our list.

Digg Lab

Labs Digg - Bigspy/
This is like Digg's own Twitter space. All the feeds are displayed on a page. The hotter the topic, the bolder is displays. Number of digs are shown in red at the end of every story/news. Latest stories are shown on top of the page. The news move so quickly out of screen that I personally find hard to keep track of them. By the time I reach to end of a line its already gone.
